Extreme Environments

Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about the Polar Regions. In particular we have learnt about the differences between the Arctic and Antarctic, how animals are adapted to live there and how climate change is affecting these regions.

This week, your task is to choose an animal that lives in the Polar Regions and write a paragraph explaining how they are adapted to live in these extreme environments. Think carefully about the colour of their fur, where they live, what they eat and how they survive the cold.

  1. The penguins
Penguins are adapted to the Arctic because the have very warm feathers and when it's extremely cold the penguins get into little groups and there is a penguin in the middle and all the other penguins stay outside the middle and hug the penguin in the middle.
Penguins are warm blooded that is one fact about them being adapted to the arctic.
Penguins feel warmer on the ice (snow)because it is so cold that parts of the water get FROZEN, But did you know? That penguins swim better than they walk.

  2. basic facts

To live in such cold places, Arctic foxes have several adaptations that allow them to survive. Their round, compact bodies minimize surface area that is exposed to the cold air. Their muzzle, ears, and legs are short, which also conserves heat.
Of course, the defining feature of the Arctic fox is their deep, thick fur which allows them to maintain a consistent body temperature. Arctic foxes also have thick fur on their paws, which allows them to walk on both snow and ice.

    diet
Lemmings are the staple food for Arctic foxes. However, they are quite opportunistic, and will eat whatever is available out on the frozen tundra, even if it means scavenging leftovers from other predators, such as polar bears!

    Population

Arctic fox populations range in the hundred thousands, but fluctuate with the available lemming population.
The Arctic fox is found throughout the entire Arctic tundra, through Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Russia, Norway, Scandinavia, and even Iceland, where it is the only native land mammal.

    Behavior

The tundra is not an easy place to live. It is barren, rocky, and without much vegetation. Arctic foxes are extremely well adapted to their frigid homes, and have secured a niche where they make the best out of almost any situation.

One of the most unique and interesting behaviors of Arctic foxes is how they hunt. They have incredible hearing, aided by their wide, front-facing ears, which allow them to locate the precise position of their prey beneath the snow.

When the Arctic fox hears its next meal under the snow-pack, it leaps into the air and pounces, breaking through the layer of snow right onto the prey beneath.

    Reproduction

Mating season for Arctic foxes usually lasts from early September to early May. Litters are usually between 5-9 pups, though much larger litters aren't uncommon. Arctic foxes usually mate for life, and both mother and father help raise the pups
    Did You Know?

Arctic foxes change the color of their fur with the seasons. In winter they are white to blend in with the snow, while in the summer they change to brown!

  3. To help Blue Whales adapt to the ocean they develop, thick layers of blubber, which allows them to maintain their body heat and survive in extremely cold environments.
Some Whales can also use their blubber for energy during times when food is scarce or during long trips. They feed on krill during cold, stormy winters right up to the ice edge. Blue Whales are now endangered species in the Arctic.

  4. Polar bears mostly eat seals, bearded seals, walrus and birds' eggs. They can travel very long distance to find a food.
Polar bears have black skin to absorb heat and white fur to blend in whith their environment. They are excellent swimmers.
They dig caves in a large snow drift, stay there with their babies whole winter and come out in spring.

  5. Polar Bears
Polar bears are found in the Arctic circle. They are well adapted to a life in the sea ice and weather that can be fiercely cold . They are generally found where there is abundant seal population.

They have 2 layers of thick fur to get protected from Hypothermia. Polar bears have black skin under which there is a layer of fat that can measure up to 4.5 inches. In addition, their compact ears and small tail also prevent heat loss. In fact, polar bears have more problems with overheating than they do from the cold, especially when they run. Polar bear feet are furred and covered with small bumps to keep them from slipping on ice.

They eat fish but their main meal is seals. Their sense of smell is powerful for detecting seals. Their sense of smell is 1000 - 2000 times stronger than a human(They can smell seals 20-90 miles away!).

Their powerful claws can haul out a 40-90kg seal from the water for dinner.

The greatest threat to Polar bears is the emission of green gases. Green gases acts like a blanket that heats the earth & changes the climate.
To save polar bears and their sea ice habitat, we must take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  6. The polar bears
The polar bears have to dig a big whole go in and hibernate until it is winter there only hibernate at summer and wake on the first day of winter.

  7. Penguin are very cute animals. They live under the water with a lot of different animals. They are dengerous at the same time they can bite you.Penguins are adapted to the Arctic because the have very warm feathers.Penguins feel warmer on the ice because there body dont bring any cool heat or weather soo they feel hot even tho is very cold outside .That penguins swim better than they walk.

  8. Penguins
Penguins are animals taht likes ice and cold so we can find them in the arctic area.
They can live in cold area because of their body structure, they can adapte and handle the cold easily. their fur is in black, white and yellow color and its like rubber;the thing that let them able to keep their body temperature no matter how cold is it outside.
penguins likes to eat fish, they are a good swimmer and they can dive deeply in the water to catch their food.
penguins lives in groups and they can not live alone.

  10. PENGUIN
Some penguins live in the Antarctic where it is extremely cold. Penguins can't fly but are excellent swimmers. Penguins have to keep their body temperature high to keep active. They have thick skin and lots of fat known as blubber which is under their skin to keep warm. They also huddle together with other penguins to keep warm. Emperor Penguins are best known for this. They may huddle in a group of a few thousand. They also have thick, black feathers which help to keep warm. The black colour helps absorb heat from the sun.

  11. Penguins,

Penguins are animals that like the winter, they can swim better than they walk. There fur is mainly black and there beaks are orange. Penguins are also good at sliding on ice. They mostly live in the arctic because it is not too cold, some penguins live in the antartic. They don' t mind the cold because they have fur to protect them like polar bears. Penguins like to eat fish. They catch there prey by swimming in the ocean or the sea.

  12. Polar bears are well adapted to a life on the sea ice.Polar bear live in the circumpolar north in areas where they can hunt their primary prey, ice seals. They are found in Canada, the U.S(Alaska), Greenland ,Russia and Norway.Polar bears' looks whitest when they are clean and in high angle sunlight.polar bears only hibernate at summer until the first day of winter.
Polar bears walk at about five to six kilometres per hour. They can run as fast as 40 kilometres per hour-but only for short distances.
Polar bears like to be clean and dry because matted and wet fur is a poor insulator.

  13. PENGUINS

Penguins are flightless birds because they have little wings. They are highly adapted to life in the water even to catch fish and eat them. Penguin who live in Antarctica which is very cold, they eat krill and squid. Their prey can be found within 60 feet of the surface. So penguins have no need to swim in deep water.

  15. Polar bear.polar bears babies are normally born in january.polar bears are normally born in winter.polar bears are born beneath the snow were the adult hibernate for the winter. They are born blind and death. Polar bears grow thick coats of hair to protect themselves against the harsh weather of the North pole. Baby polar bears grow into very powerful creatures with good hunting skills.

Polar bears are in danger because global warming reduces the size of their habitat and make winters shorter and warmer.
